Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Canadian student visa (study permit), you must:

  • Have a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover:

    • Tuition fees

    • Living expenses

    • Return travel costs

  • Prove genuine intent to study and leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay (temporary resident requirement)

  • Meet English or French language requirements (if required by the institution)

  • Pass a medical examination (if applicable)

  • Provide a police clearance certificate (if required)

  • Hold a valid passport or travel document

Working While Studying

Most international students can:

  • Work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions

  • Work full-time during scheduled breaks (e.g. holidays)

Work eligibility is subject to the conditions listed on your study permit.

Length of Stay

Your study permit is generally valid for:

  • The length of your study program, plus

  • An additional 90 days to allow you to prepare to leave Canada or apply for an extension or a post-study work permit

If you enrol in further studies, you may be able to extend your study permit from within Canada.
